Amateur radio 'Q' codes.
Many operators that are new to the channels have asked about the meaning and use of 'Q' codes on the channels.
There are many Q codes that are used by amateur radio operators that consist of a standard three letter code each beginning with the letter "Q".
The original Q codes were used by commercial telegraphy services, these were further developed to create different 'sets' of standard codes for aeronautical, maritime and amateur radio use.
The standard Amateur radio Q code list contains many codes mostly used for CW (morse) communications but a few of the codes have become commonly used during voice communications. The Q codes You are likely to hear used regularly by radio amateurs on the Network Radios channels are only a fraction of the complete standard Q code set.
The most common are:
CQ : Calling 'CQ' is a general call for contact, inviting any operators listening on that frequency (or channel) to respond.
QSO : A two way communication, conversation or chat. ( A long, drawn out QSO is often referred to as a 'rag chew' )
QSL : Confirmation or agreement : As a question "QSL?" = confirm information is correct : as an answer "QSL" = I confirm information is correct.
QTH : Your location or position : As a question. "What is Your QTH?" : As an answer. "My QTH is Ayrshire, Scotland."
QSY : Change Frequency (or channel) : "QSY to 3.777MHz" = change frequency to 3.777 : "QSY to channel 03" = change to channel 03
QRX : Stand By : As a statement. "Please QRX" = Please stop transmitting. : "I am going to QRX" = I am going to stop transmitting.
QRZ : Who is calling me? (This is often used incorrectly by stations calling QRZ when no one else has actually called them)
QRT : Closing down. : "I am going QRT" = I am switching off the radio.
QRV : Ready : Ready to receive on this frequency. (or channel)
:Note: These are only a few of the Q-codes You may hear 'on air'. If You hear a station using Q-codes You don't understand, Just ask :-)
There is also a list of the International Q-codes for Amateur Radio on the 'MISC' page on this site.
